Uncover the Secrets of Invisible Writing!
Have you ever wanted to send a secret message that only you and your friends can see? With a simple mixture of baking soda and a few other household items, you can create invisible writing that reveals itself with a magical twist! This fun experiment not only lets you be creative but also introduces you to some fascinating chemistry.

Materials You’ll Need
Baking soda – 1 tablespoon
Warm water – 2 tablespoons
Turmeric powder – 1 teaspoon
Alcohol (rubbing alcohol or any clear alcohol) – 1 tablespoon
Cotton swabs or small brush (for writing)
White paper (for your secret message)
Small bowl (for mixing)
Heat source (optional: a hairdryer or candle for revealing the message; ensure safety)
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Prepare the Invisible Ink: In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 2 tablespoons of warm water. Stir until the baking soda is fully dissolved. This will be your invisible ink.
Write Your Message: Using a cotton swab or small brush, dip it into the baking soda mixture and write a secret message on a piece of white paper. Be sure to let the message dry completely. It will appear invisible!
Prepare the Revealing Solution: In another small bowl, mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder with 1 tablespoon of alcohol. Stir well to combine. This solution will help reveal your message.
Reveal the Message: Once the baking soda ink is dry, take a brush and dip it into the turmeric-alcohol mixture. Gently brush over the area where you wrote your secret message. Watch as your message starts to appear in a beautiful yellow color!
Dry and Display: Let the paper dry for a few minutes. Now you can share your secret message with friends or display your artwork!
The Science Behind It
This experiment demonstrates the fascinating principles of pH indicators and the chemical properties of baking soda:
Invisible Ink: Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a basic compound, which means it has a higher pH. When you write with it, the writing is invisible because it blends in with the white paper.
Turmeric as a pH Indicator: Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which changes color in response to pH levels. In basic environments, turmeric appears red, while in acidic or neutral environments, it remains yellow. When you brush the turmeric-alcohol solution over the baking soda writing, the basic nature of the baking soda reacts with the turmeric, causing a color change and revealing your message.
This invisible writing activity is a fun way to blend art and science while exploring chemistry in an exciting and engaging way. Make different secret messages and show them to your friends! Try experimenting with different pH indicators or even see what happens with different writing tools!
